A Collection Management and Development Policy (CMDP) is primarily a written statement setting out how your library manages its existing collections and how the collections will be developed in future.
A CMDP ensures consistency of practice among those responsible for developing the collections, communicates policy to library users and provides a basis for continuity over time and through staff changes.
This module will describe the framework and rationale for developing a Collection Management and Development Policy, provide the participant with the tools to actually get a policy written, and some tips about the implementation phase.
At the end of this course participants will be able to state the reasons why a Collection Management and Development Policy is necessary for a library, explain the difference between a policy and a procedure, write the policy and collection specific statements and understand how to get approval for and implement the policy.
